Manic Monday | Drive-By Reviews ~ Out of the Ordinary Edition

Manic Monday | Drive-By Reviews is a weekly feature where we’ll share some mini-reviews Alice-style.

Primal Hunger {Pendragon Gargoyles #1} by Sydney Somers

When the sun goes down, passion is unleashed.

Kennedy Beaumont loves her bartending job, even if her spirited nature sometimes gets her in trouble. Like threatening to hose down one of Pendragon’s co-owners. When it comes to Tristan, she could use a good hosing down herself—maybe it’ll help her stop casting him as the star of her wickedest dreams. Since he goes out of his way to avoid her, it ought to be easy to put him out of her head—until he reluctantly offers her a ride home.

Gargoyle shape-shifter Tristan Callaghan hasn’t had time for anything other than recovering the mystical dagger that was used to permanently lock his brother in a prison of stone. The cat inside him should have stopped craving Kennedy’s touch long ago, but now that she’s sitting next to him in his car, his very human need for her is sharper than ever.

The distraction is costly. In a split second, Kennedy finds herself thrust into a dangerous, millennia-old hunt for Excalibur. A hunt that marks her for death—and leaves Tristan with a painful choice—sacrifice his family, his quest…or the one woman meant to be his.

Warning: There’s nothing tame about this alpha male hell-bent on claiming his mate. Featuring bone-melting explicit sex, graphic language, violence and a little harmless bite…or two.

“Curiouser and curiouser!” ~ Alice

Opening Line: “What are you going to do, fire me?” {Kennedy}
Closing Line: “How about hocus-pocus?” {Tristan}

“What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?” ~ Alice

Primal Hunger introduces us to Kennedy Beaumont, a human bartender who’s hot for Gargoyle shape-shifter, Tristan.

Tristan is on a mission to recover the mystical dagger that was used to permanently lock his brother in a prison of stone. He “left town to hunt down a lead as much as to let his craving for the human’s touch pass. One look from Kennedy tonight, one stubborn arch of her brow as she pointed that hose at him …”. Now, he’s back and his cat wants Kennedy.

Don’t think it’s just a “they both crave each other, but don’t know it, yet won’t admit it either” story because there is much more to this tale Sydney’s woven. There are gargoyles, shifters, Arthur and Excalibur, curses and more. It was a refreshing, super sexy read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Rating: ★★★★☆

“Twinkle, twinkle, little bat! How I wonder what you’re at.” ~ Mad Hatter

Sydney Somers was a new2me author.

“That’s just it. If you don’t think, then you shouldn’t talk.” ~ The Hare

There wasn’t anything about this book I didn’t like. Some may find it a bit too smexy, but not I!

“Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves.” ~ The Duchess

Favorite Quote: “It’s sarcasm or rock quietly in the corner. Forgive me for picking the option that doesn’t involved a strait jacket.” {Kennedy}

“We’re all mad here.” ~ The Cheshire Cat

This book receives the Cheshire Cat rating for introducing me to a unique paranormal romance with hot shifters in a very interesting world. I’m “mad” about super sexy pendragon gargoyles! 🙂
I look forward to continuing the series.

The Taste of Night {Signs of the Zodiac #2} by Vicki Pettersson

Equal parts Light and Shadow, Joanna Archer must fulfill a destiny she never wanted. Once a photographer and heiress to a casino fortune, she is now dedicated to the cause of good . . . but susceptible to the seductions of evil.

A deadly virus is descending on Las Vegas—a terrifying plague unleashed by the powerful overlord of Zodiac’s dark side: Joanna’s father. Chaos and panic grip Sin City as agents of Light fall prey to the terrifying epidemic. Death reigns supreme—and Joanna stands at dead center of an epic and terrible war long foretold, the last hope of a damned world.

But first she must somehow conquer the malevolence that grows all around her . . . and within.

“Curiouser and curiouser!” ~ Alice

Opening Line: “It’s funny how a name can change the world’s perception of you.” {Joanna}
Closing Line: “Trembling in skin that was supposed to be mine.” {Joanna}

“What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?” ~ Alice

The Taste of Night picks up where The Scent of Shadows left off. Joanna, as Olivia, is still trying to adjust to her life with the merry band of superheroes that battle the Shadow Zodiac. She continues to hunt down her rapist Joaquim, a big baddy with the Shadow.

Meanwhile, in Gotham City Vegas, the Light is chillaxin’ in their hideout with the belief that things are quiet because the Shadow must regroup and all is well. Joanne doesn’t agree and does what she does best – disobey orders to stay put.

When a super deadly plaque is released on Vegas killing thousands, the Light try to find a way to stop it and save those who are sick.
