ZAM: “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” & the Mash-Up

You might’ve guessed from the “Monster Mash” post that this was coming.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

First published in 2008, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith spawned an entirely new subgenre when it became a successful bestseller, spawning a tirade of monster mash-ups of classics and retellings of the lives of famous historical figures.

Some would argue that these ruin perfectly good works of fiction stating that the authors can only take credit for “editing” rather than writing these books considering they only include a small percentage of new material. An easy way to make money, some would say.

On the other hand, others believe it’s an imaginative way to encourage people to read the classics, even if they aren’t the original author’s words, at least it might motivate some to hunt down the inspiration for these new versions. What do you think?
